Motivation for Developing PHP Biometric Authentication Silver PACK
Towards end of year 2018, just before Christmas, I was preparing to usher in the festive season by going on a long trip to unwind at a coastal town.
I wanted to go swim in the ocean and bask in the sun while doing nothing but relaxing and have an amazing time away from work.
We had great plans for the holidays!
But they had to be shelved so that I could attend to a client request.
There was this prospective client from Democratic Republic of Congo who had earlier on reached out to me before the festive season.
He was developing a PHP Biometric Solution Project for Charity Schools in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
By the way, Democratic Republic of Congo is popularly known as DRC.
DRC is in the lower West African region and it borders Uganda and Rwanda on the right. Most of the world’s Diamonds and other precious Gemstones come from this Country.
I do not want to assume that you know where DRC is situated on the Globe hence the reason why I partly described its location and mentioned Diamonds to help you remember it.
My guy in DRC must have gotten free time to work on his project over the December period.
The PHP Web Biometric Solutions I had at the time did not seem to suit his business case.
I suggested to him that I could develop a custom PHP Biometric solution for him but he did not say much about agreeing to that idea. This was around October or November of year 2018 thereabout.
What made his case unique was that he wanted to use Suprema Fingerprint Scanners instead of DigitalPersona or Upek or Eikon Touch Fingerprint Scanners.
I think it was one of those cases where you find that you bought Fingerprint Scanners before determining whether the API that comes with it is able to do what you want.
Some Fingerprint Scanners cannot fire some Programmable Fingerprint Scanner events like onFingerTouch, onFingerRemove, onFingerSwipe, onFingerConnect, onFingerDisconnect; quickly as would be required for use on Dynamic Web Browser based Applications
or even know when the user has opened a new tab on their web browser and hence should not receive any events from Fingerprint Scanner when the user is on another tab other than the one with the Web Biometric Application.
Imagine a Fingerprint Scanner has been disconnected from the Client Web Browser but a Fingerprint Scanner API does not have an event functionality that fires to communicate that to the Web Browser so that the Web Application does not attempt to call it?
That would resort to all manner of weird errors on the Client Web Browser GUI that would make use of the Fingerprint Scanner very inappropriate and unusable for Web Applications and PHP Web Applications too.
These are just but a few examples out of the many other things that random fingerprint scanners not designed to work on web browser based applications would grapple with.
I have developed Web Biometric Solutions for over 5 years now and I can assure you that with DigitalPersona Fingerprint Scanners as from DigitalPersona 4500 you will get it right the first time and your Web Biometric solution will work flawlessly.
Not unless your mission is Suicide, do NOT Experiment with some of those funny fingerprint scanners in your Web Application(s). Go with DigitalPersona and save yourself the pain of a Failed Project and the Embarrassments of implementing your Project with Mediocre fingerprint scanners.
What I have observed with other Fingerprint Scanner APIs is that, it is as though they try to play the catch up game. They try to make themselves relevant for use on Web and end up being clumsy and rigid when they finally budge.
You will have to tell them what to do programmatically and trust me that is not an easy thing to do if the API it comes with or the Web Browser does not understand that code logic.
That is a job that is better taken care of by the manufacturers of the Fingerprint Scanners
They manufacturers of the Fingerprint Scanners should also include programmable APIs of calling the same functionalities in Web.
Having used a number of Fingerprint Scanners in the past and knowing how some of them work, your Client from DRC here was in safe hands.
I was NOT going to let the Client from DRC down!
I knew there was a way I would get him a solution that will work for his type of PHP setup.
I guaranteed him that I would be able to help him out.
I helped him alleviate his fears and worries that the money they had sunk in buying Suprema Fingerprint Scanners would not go to waste.
From previous e-mail conversations, I had gathered that they had made some headways with developing the front end (client side) of their PHP Web Application and were in need of a helping hand to handle the Biometrics Authentication Server Side.
They wanted to implement a PHP Web Application that could Biometrically Authenticate up to about 100,000 Fingerprints.
When my Client from DRC decided to get his Biometric project going over the Festive season, I abandoned my holiday plans and recalibrated my mind back to work mode.
Now, in their country DRC, the National Presidential Elections were setting out to take place during that time. In fact, the Elections were scheduled for 30th of December 2018.
My Client from DRC did not seem to be bothered much about the impeding elections but little did we know that they would interfere with our project as I will be telling you shortly.
We agreed that I would develop a custom PHP Biometric Solution for him and that is what I was doing in the last 4 to 5 days to Christmas.
Before Christmas, I sent him the first prototype to test.
As happens almost with every other Software Developer, the application worked fine on my Dev Computer but when it shipped to client side, it misbehaved.
A few teething problems here and there and more so slow internet connection but we were progressing very well.
I fixed the bugs and send my friend in DRC new PHP Biometric Sources.
Christmas was the following day but I let him know that I would be available to work with him should he need to consult me.
After Christmas, on 27th December I sent him a follow up e-mail to check on how he was progressing.
He replied back to me with the status progress of the project but then there was something silly I had commented out on the code while assembling the new sources for him and something now was not working fine.
I fixed that and sent him other new PHP Biometric sources again.
We kept working at this project, testing, trouble shooting and integrating components bit by bit until I think the last Saturday of the year 2018 when they would go for the National Elections which were going to take place on 30th December 2018.
We agreed that after the elections we would resume and finalize on the remaining part so that we wind up on the project and he gets to commission it for use in the charity schools in DRC that he was developing it for.
The Presidential elections in DRC took place as planned on 30th Dec 2018 but on the following day, the 31st Dec 2018, the government of DRC turned off the internet.
So my Client from DRC‘s project stalled!
We could NOT collaborate on our Project without internet.
We could NOT use E-mail, Skype, Team Viewer or AnyDesk for Remote Login support.
For a total 20 Days, a project was jeopardized by a Presidential Election.
After the release of the preliminary results on 10th of January 2019, I thought the internet would be turned back on but this derailed on for another 10 days up to 20th of January 2019 when internet was finally turned back ON.
Has the government of your country ever turned off the internet for whatever reason?
How did it affect you?
As a person in the domain of software industry, the internet is a very essential aspect of my life. I do not imagine what a day without Google, E-mail and Tech Forums would be like. Hahaa!
I later on learnt that the internet in their country was turned off in a probable attempt to prevent speculations about the presidential elections results outcome.
As soon as the internet was back on, the very same day they turned it back on, my friend from DRC dropped me an e-mail to notify me that their country had been connected back to civilization and that we could resume on the remainder of the project.
Wasting no time, I gathered from him what else needed remedying in our Project from his end so that I could update it with the new PHP Biometric sources I had been working on in the meantime.
I prepared a new release of PHP Biometric Sources and sent them over to him.
We worked on the last bits, tested the end solution and finally he commissioned it to production in the first few days after the internet was connected back on.
We were cautious that the internet could be turned off again but this did not happen.
My friend from DRC communicated back to notify me that the system was working well after he integrated it with their PHP Web Application and commissioned it on the production server on his end.
I asked him to observe how the PHP Biometric Integration works for at least a month and told him that if he needed any help I would be available to assist him.
So far so good! The integration was a success and it works great for them.
By the way there is something I never mentioned here, my friend from DRC and I had a language barrier because DRC is a Francophone country but thanks to Google Translate, that did not stand in the way of the success of our PHP Biometric Integration Project.
Imagine the shock on me the first time I remote accessed his Dev Computer while supporting him via Team Viewer and seeing everything in his Dev Computer including the menus, sub menus in French? I was baffled!
I adapted part of this Software Project components to develop PHP Web Biometric Authentication Silver PACK that can authenticate 100,000 Fingerprints. This PHP Web Biometric solution supersedes in functionalities the Simple PHP Biometric Authentication and PHP Biometric Lite Web Biometric solutions I had developed in the past.

Important Factors to consider before Buying a Fingerprint Scanner for use in your Web Application for Biometric Authentication
- NOT all cars are designed for all weather roads but DigitalPersona series of Fingerprint Scanners are Excellent Workhorses whether for a Standalone application, Linux application, Web application or Android Application. This is not the same case for many other substandard Fingerprint Scanners in the market
- The DigitalPersona series of Fingerprint Scanners have been tested and proven in all manner of industry applications and surprisingly enough, they DO NOT cost more than the other Fingerprint Scanners in the market.
- DigitalPersona series of Fingerprint Scanners retail at around USD $ 80 – 99 a unit piece and if you Buy more than one unit piece, you will also qualify for discounts from their retailers too. Do NOT be the guy who chooses the bad rotten fruit in the market where every other fruit on sale retails for the same price whether it be green, ripe or rotting inside. I trust that I have opened your eyes. Friends have each other’s back. I got your back!
Hey, that’s just about it! This summarizes it all.
